How to determine the right products for your flammable hazard monitoring needs Today’s flame detectors utilize optical technologies to detect flames. Flames are known to emit electromagnetic radiation in the infrared (IR), visible light, and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths depending on the fuel source. Because of this, optical flame-sensing technologies have been developed utilizing UV, UV/IR and multi-spectrum infrared. These products rely on line-of-site detection of the radiation emitted in the spectral bands to determine if a flame is real. Fuel Types False Alarm Rejection Detection Range Field of View Fuel Types Consider whether the potential flame you are looking to…
Wearable connected technology has become commonplace in our personal lives from tracking our Uber’s location on our phone to checking the monitor on our wrists for our heart rate – and it’s changing industrial safety protocols as well. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is also going through an evolution in incident detection, avoidance, reporting, and management through the rise of connected safety in the workplace. Connected gas detection devices can help avoid serious workplace incidents. With around “340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work-related illnesses annually”, according to the International Labour Organisation, we can do better. WHAT…

Key Results Challenge A rare event happened which caused the soil around a transport pipeline to erode, exposing a section of the pipeline. This created several challenges not only to the transport of product but extending to environmental and societal factors. This is because the pipeline was transporting product containing Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), a deadly toxic gas. The customer immediately took action to fix the issue, but in the meantime, needed to monitor around the exposed section of pipe for leaks of H2S. This was not only to protect the workers, but the nearby residents who were alarmed by the…
Background In February 2015, a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Speedway, Indianapolis initiated emergency procedures after a strong ammonia smell was sensed by 25 workers. The plant was immediately evacuated and a significant emergency response was provided by local Fire Department and Hazmat teams. The source of the leak was an 80,000 gallon tank, which was used in the refrigeration processes within the plant. Concentration readings fell from 700 ppm to about Photography courtesy of Piho Engineering 150 ppm, which was significant, though the plant could not be operated until they were further reduced to below 25 ppm. Throughout the incident,…

FREE WEBINAR Three presentations in one webinar. Learn how to save time and costs, while ensuring quality in vaccine research, production, and storage. Date: April 28th, 2021 Time: 10:00 AM (EDT) TOPICS In an upcoming webinar hosted by our partner Vaisala-K-Patents, three Vaisala experts will cover several solutions for vaccine production and storage. First, they will describe process refractometers used in vaccine production’s purification step by sucrose density gradient. Purification is one of the most important steps in vaccine production, and sucrose density gradient method is widely used for the purification and concentration of viruses in large-scale vaccine production. Next…
Consider a number of factors to determine the most appropriate option by Emerson Automation Solutions FIRES AND explosions are common hazards in the chemical and refining industries. Unexpected releases of flammable liquids and gases can ignite, sometimes violently, when mixed with air, leading to injury and property damage. Energy-sensing flame detectors can enhance the safety of processes involving flammable materials by triggering an alarm when a fire erupts, thus providing early warning and helping ensure people’s safety. However, operating staff often debate about which type of device to select and where to place the sensors for best coverage. The confusion…
KEY RESULTS Deployed in Days not Months Significant installation savings with easy deployment Installed flexible solution in a remote area Challenge Customer operates an underground natural gas storage facility. Once a natural gas field, the facility was successfully converted into a storage reservoir through gas reinjection. The process of conversion also involves drilling many new wells that enable a more rapid withdrawal of gas from the reservoir storage. These wells are a source of methane gas leakages. Reducing methane emissions is a challenge for the oil & gas industry, as is compliance with emerging regulations. Moreover, increasing gas monitoring density…
