Process Trace Moisture Analyzer for Biogas Metering and Gas Grid lnfeed Plant – Application Note

January 26, 2022

Part of the “Energiewende” (energy transition) towards reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increase of renewable energy is the production of biogas. Biogas can be produced from a broad range of feedstocks. In a process of anaerobic digestion, the biomass or energy crops are converted to biogas by several types of bacteria within the fermenter. Once the process has started the bacteria must be fed constantly without interruption. The produced biogas is typically consisting of 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide with traces of hydrogen sulfide and water vapour. The gas is sent to the treatment plant where impurities are…

Sight Flow Indicators – Pulp & Paper and Black Liquor Applications

January 10, 2022

Figure 1: Sight Flow Indicators  Breaking down wood into usable fibers to create paper products is aggressive and demanding. This chemical-based process can be challenging for materials used in pipe, fittings, and specialty instrumentation. Sight flow indicators, like the examples in Figure 1 below, provide valuable insight into various applications by providing a direct view into systems and processes. Figure 2: Paper Production – Two-Step Process Processes supporting paper production include: Wood preparation Pulping – to separate and clean the fibers Beating and refining the fibers Diluting to form a thin fiber slurry Suspended in solution Papermaking Forming a web…

Principles of Flame Detection

September 15, 2021

How to determine the right products for your flammable hazard monitoring needs Today’s flame detectors utilize optical technologies to detect flames. Flames are known to emit electromagnetic radiation in the infrared (IR), visible light, and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths depending on the fuel source. Because of this, optical flame-sensing technologies have been developed utilizing UV, UV/IR and multi-spectrum infrared. These products rely on line-of-site detection of the radiation emitted in the spectral bands to determine if a flame is real. Fuel Types False Alarm Rejection Detection Range Field of View Fuel Types Consider whether the potential flame you are looking to…

HOW CONNECTED SAFETY IS TRANSFORMING THE WORKPLACE

June 28, 2021

Wearable connected technology has become commonplace in our personal lives from tracking our Uber’s location on our phone to checking the monitor on our wrists for our heart rate – and it’s changing industrial safety protocols as well. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is also going through an evolution in incident detection, avoidance, reporting, and management through the rise of connected safety in the workplace. Connected gas detection devices can help avoid serious workplace incidents. With around “340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work-related illnesses annually”, according to the International Labour Organisation, we can do better. WHAT…

Case Study – Vanguard Temp Work-site Monitoring success story

May 11, 2021

Key Results Challenge A rare event happened which caused the soil around a transport pipeline to erode, exposing a section of the pipeline. This created several challenges not only to the transport of product but extending to environmental and societal factors. This is because the pipeline was transporting product containing Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), a deadly toxic gas. The customer immediately took action to fix the issue, but in the meantime, needed to monitor around the exposed section of pipe for leaks of H2S. This was not only to protect the workers, but the nearby residents who were alarmed by the…

Detecting Toxic Gas with Open Path Systems

April 27, 2021

Background In February 2015, a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Speedway, Indianapolis initiated emergency procedures after a strong ammonia smell was sensed by 25 workers. The plant was immediately evacuated and a significant emergency response was provided by local Fire Department and Hazmat teams. The source of the leak was an 80,000 gallon tank, which was used in the refrigeration processes within the plant. Concentration readings fell from 700 ppm to about Photography courtesy of Piho Engineering 150 ppm, which was significant, though the plant could not be operated until they were further reduced to below 25 ppm. Throughout the incident,…
