Spectrex SharpEye™ 40/40 C & D Series Flame Detectors
The Spectrex SharpEye next-generation 40/40 C & D Series provides advanced optical flame detection for industrial and commercial applications where fast response, long-range detection, false alarm immunity, and hazardous area reliability are critical. The series includes QuadSense™ triple infrared (IR3) models and ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) models, allowing users to select the detection technology best suited for hydrocarbon fires, hydrogen fire detection, and other hazardous flame sources.
The 40/40C Series is designed for dependable flame detection with a wide operating temperature range and long-distance hydrocarbon fire detection up to 215 ft. (65 m). The 40/40D Series is built for more demanding applications, offering extended detection up to 300 ft. (90 m), ultra-fast response options, enhanced temperature performance, and stainless steel enclosure availability.
Both series are engineered for flexible integration into new or existing fire and gas detection systems. Configuration, monitoring, and maintenance functions can be supported through HART® or RS-485 Modbus® communication, while multiple output options help support compatibility with common plant safety systems.

Description
Multiple Flame Detection Technologies
The Spectrex 40/40 flame detector series gives facilities several detection technologies for different fire hazards. Available configurations include QuadSense™ triple infrared, or IR3, and UV/IR detection. In addition, select models support hydrogen fire detection. This flexibility helps users match the detector to the fuel source, application, and required response time.
Long-Range Flame Detection
The 40/40C Series supports hydrocarbon flame detection up to 215 ft. (65 m), depending on model and fuel type. Meanwhile, select 40/40D models extend detection up to 300 ft. (90 m). As a result, the series can help improve coverage in larger process areas, storage facilities, and industrial sites. Longer detection distances may also reduce the number of detectors required in some applications.
Fast and Ultra-Fast Response Options
The 40/40C Series provides reliable response for applications requiring detection in under five seconds. However, the 40/40D Series supports more demanding response requirements. Select 40/40D UV/IR models can detect fire in under 20 milliseconds. Additionally, select 40/40D configurations support high-speed explosion response. This makes the 40/40D Series a strong option for critical areas where fast detection matters.
Hydrogen Fire Detection Options
Hydrogen fire detection is available on select IR3 and UV/IR models. These include the 40/40C-M, 40/40C-LB, 40/40D-M, and 40/40D-LB configurations. Therefore, users can select a Spectrex 40/40 flame detector for hydrocarbon hazards, hydrogen hazards, or mixed-risk environments. This is especially valuable for hydrogenation, fuel cell, battery charging, and specialized process applications.
False Alarm Immunity
Proven IR3 and UV/IR technologies help improve detection reliability in challenging environments. They also help reduce unwanted alarms caused by common industrial interference sources. As a result, operators can maintain confidence in the flame detection system while supporting safe site operation.
Built-In Testing and Event Logging
Integrated built-in test functionality continuously validates optical integrity and electronic circuitry. This helps confirm that the detector can perform as expected. In addition, the internal event recorder supports maintenance review and troubleshooting. Teams can use this information to better understand past alarms, faults, or operating events.
Flexible Outputs and Communication
The series offers multiple output and communication options for system integration. Options include relays, analog voltage, stepped 0–20 mA, HART® communication, and RS-485 Modbus® communication. Therefore, users can integrate the detector into many fire and gas systems, control systems, and site safety networks.
Heated Optics for Harsh Conditions
Heated optics help maintain clear optical performance in difficult environmental conditions. They can help reduce issues caused by condensation, frost, or changing weather. This makes the series suitable for harsh industrial installations where reliable visibility is important.
Hazardous Area Approval Options
Approval options include INMETRO, USA and Canada Explosion-Proof, ATEX/IECEx/UKCA, EAC CU TR, and Korea Flameproof configurations. These options help support use in hazardous area applications. However, users should confirm the correct approval, enclosure, and configuration for each installation.
Rugged Industrial Construction
The 40/40C Series is available with a heavy-duty copper-free aluminum enclosure. The 40/40D Series is available with electropolished stainless steel 316 or heavy-duty copper-free aluminum enclosure options. Together, these construction choices support durability in demanding industrial environments.
