Yarway Color-Port® Water Level Gauges

Yarway Color-Port® Water Level Gauges provide continuous, direct water-level indication for low-, medium- and high-pressure boilers. Their bi-colour, ported design shows water in green and steam in red. Therefore, operators can quickly distinguish the water level from the steam space.

The gauge uses a trapezoidal stainless steel body with individual viewing ports. Each port contains tempered glass, protective mica, sealing components and spring loading. This construction supports reliable sealing, clear visibility and long service life.

Yarway offers Color-Port water level gauges with 5 to 26 ports. Available visibility ranges from 12-3/16 to 72-9/16 inches. Operators can also select direct-view or mirror-view arrangements to suit the installation.

A complete Color-Port system can include the gauge, a water column or tie bar, two gauge valves and an LED illuminator/display. Yarway offers configurations for pressures up to 3,000 psi, depending on the model and assembly.

Westech Industrial supplies Yarway Color-Port water level gauges throughout Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Our team can assist with product selection, replacement planning and application support. Additionally, Westech’s service and Custom Fabrication capabilities can support broader instrumentation and control system requirements.

Description

Clear Red and Green Water-Level Indication

Yarway Color-Port® water level gauges provide a highly visible, bi-colour indication of boiler water level. The LED illuminator directs red and green light through each gauge port.

Water and steam refract the light differently. As a result, operators see green where water fills the gauge and red where steam appears. This sharp colour contrast helps operators identify the steam-water interface quickly.

Large-diameter port openings further improve visibility. The level display then focuses the coloured light through dedicated viewing slots.

Low-, Medium- and High-Pressure Configurations

Yarway offers Color-Port® water level gauges for several boiler pressure ranges. Low-pressure designs support applications up to 850 psi. Medium-pressure designs support applications up to 1,800 psi. High-pressure designs extend the operating range to 3,000 psi.

The available arrangements include Model 4511N and Model 4595F gauges. Model 4511N supports low- and medium-pressure configurations. Model 4595F supports high-pressure installations.

Customers can also select suitable gauge valves and mounting arrangements. Options include 780 stuffing-box gaugecocks and Welbloc L200V gauge valves.

Spring-Loaded Individual Port Assemblies

Each gauge uses individual port assemblies secured by separate covers along the stainless steel body. Spring cones maintain pressure on the glass and gaskets, helping preserve the required sealing force during operation.

Technicians can tighten or remove a cover and its glass without disturbing the opposite port assembly. They can also replace individual ports while the gauge remains installed. However, Yarway recommends workbench servicing when practical.

Tempered Glass with Protective Mica

Yarway accurately moulds and tempers each circular gauge glass. A thin mica layer protects the glass surface from high-temperature water, steam and alkalis.

This protection becomes particularly important at boiler pressures above 300 psig. High-temperature water can corrode unprotected glass. The mica layer slows this corrosive action and helps extend port life.

Operators should establish a preventive maintenance schedule for the glass, mica and gasket assemblies. White or opaque glass can indicate that the protective mica has deteriorated.

Precisely Positioned Sealing Components

The glass, mica and sealing gasket fit precisely within the gauge body’s gasket groove. A specially moulded flexible graphite gasket sits between the mica and gauge body.

This arrangement supports a tight seal while maintaining the correct position of the port components. A cushion gasket, washer, retaining spring and spring cones complete each assembly.

Proper cleanliness and alignment remain essential during maintenance. Moisture, dirt, grease or fingerprints can reduce visibility and shorten port life.

Flexible Gauge and Viewing Arrangements

Yarway offers gauges with 5 to 26 ports and visibility from 12-3/16 to 72-9/16 inches. Users can combine single or multiple gauges with different columns and valve arrangements.

Direct-view systems give operators a clear view at the gauge. Alternatively, hooded mirror systems can redirect the image for viewing from below. Display hoods can also improve visibility during outdoor installations.

These options help accommodate equipment layout, viewing position and required visible range.

Long-Life LED Illumination

The Yarway LED illuminator mounts directly to the Color-Port gauge. The mounting brackets move along the illuminator’s extruded body, helping make assembly and disassembly quick and easy.

The illuminator uses red and green glass strips to create the bi-colour display. Yarway rates the LEDs for an average service life of up to 100,000 hours.

Customers can select 115 or 230 VAC input power. The power supply can mount directly on the illuminator or remotely up to 200 feet away. Longer distances require application review.

Applications

Yarway Color-Port water level gauges suit boiler and pressure-vessel applications that require continuous visual indication of a fixed water level. Available pressure, visibility and viewing arrangements support a wide range of boiler configurations.

Typical applications include:

  • Low-pressure boiler water-level indication
  • Medium-pressure boiler water-level indication
  • High-pressure boiler water-level indication
  • Boiler drums with a fixed steam-water interface
  • Pressure-containing vessels requiring direct visual level indication
  • Single or multiple gauges mounted on water columns
  • Tie-bar assemblies with gauge isolation valves
  • Installations requiring direct or mirror viewing
  • Indoor or outdoor boiler gauge installations
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I applications

PRODUCT FAQ's

How do Yarway Color-Port water level gauges work?
The gauge connects its upper passage to the vessel’s steam space. Its lower passage connects below the normal water level. Water enters the gauge and seeks a level that corresponds with the vessel level. The illuminator then uses light refraction to display water in green and steam in red.
What pressure ranges are available?
Yarway offers low-pressure designs up to 850 psi, medium-pressure designs up to 1,800 psi and high-pressure designs up to 3,000 psi. The final rating depends on the gauge model, gauge valves, flanges and complete assembly.
What do the red and green colours represent?
Green indicates water, while red indicates steam. The difference between water and steam refraction allows only the corresponding colour to reach the viewing slot.
How many viewing ports can the gauge include?
Available gauges range from 5 to 26 ports. These configurations provide visible lengths from 12-3/16 to 72-9/16 inches.
Can technicians replace individual gauge ports?
Yes. The individual port design allows technicians to replace a port without dismantling the entire gauge. However, Yarway recommends removing the gauge from the boiler piping when practical. Bench servicing provides better access for cleaning, inspection and gasket positioning.
Why does each port include a mica shield?
High-temperature water can corrode unprotected gauge glass, especially above 300 psig. The mica shield protects the glass and slows this corrosive action. Operators should inspect the ports regularly. White or opaque glass can indicate that the mica-gasket-glass assembly requires replacement.
Are direct and mirror viewing systems available?
Yes. Yarway offers direct and mirror viewing systems, including a level display, display hood and hooded mirror. The hooded mirror can redirect the image for viewing below the gauge.
What components make up a complete Color-Port system?
A complete system can include the Color-Port gauge, a water column or tie bar, two gauge valves and an LED illuminator/display. The selected arrangement depends on pressure, required visibility, gauge connections and installation layout.
Can Westech assist with service and product selection?
Yes. Westech Industrial can assist with gauge selection, replacement planning and application support throughout Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Westech also provides product support and industrial service capabilities. Our Custom Fabrication team can support related instrumentation, control and packaged-system requirements.
Can Westech help integrate the gauge into a custom system?
Yes. Westech can review the broader instrumentation and control requirements surrounding the gauge. Our team can then coordinate suitable products, service support and custom-fabricated system components. The Yarway gauge and illuminator must remain in their approved configurations. Westech will not modify the equipment in ways that affect its design or approvals.
