The PFS Sealed Meter HVT Venturi System provides reliable differential pressure flow measurement for difficult process fluids. It measures sewage, sludge, contaminated fluids, and solids-bearing line fluids without conventional impulse lines that can plug.
The HVT-SMS uses diaphragm seals at the meter’s high- and low-pressure points. This sealed configuration eliminates concerns about plugged impulse lines and trapped air. Therefore, the system helps maintain dependable measurement in demanding water and wastewater applications.
Operators can calibrate the differential pressure transmitter without removing system components or stopping the flow. They can also inspect the meter’s internal cross-section at both pressure points while it remains in service. In addition, removable diaphragm sensors simplify planned maintenance.
The system supports dual or triple DP transmitter configurations. These configurations can extend the measurable flow range while maintaining accurate, repeatable flow documentation. Depending on the meter design and secondary instrumentation, the system can achieve turndown ratios of 10:1, 20:1, 50:1, or greater.
Primary Flow Signal offers the SM Series for cast iron, ductile iron, and fabricated HVT Venturi meters. Available models include the HVT-SMC, HVT-SMD, and HVT-SMF.
Westech Industrial supplies the PFS sealed Venturi system across Canada. Our team can help review line size, meter construction, diaphragm seal size, instrumentation, and application conditions. Westech also provides service capabilities and custom fabrication for integrated flow measurement systems, panels, skids, shelters, and packaged assemblies.

Description
Sealed Pressure Measurement
The HVT-SMS replaces conventional impulse-line arrangements with diaphragm seals at the pressure measurement points. As a result, contaminated material cannot enter and block long impulse lines. The configuration also eliminates concerns about trapped air affecting pressure transmission.
This design makes the sealed Venturi system especially suitable for sewage, sludge, and solids-bearing fluid service. It also supports applications where conventional pressure connections may require frequent cleaning.
Calibration Without Interrupting Flow
Operators can calibrate the DP transmitter without removing meter components or stopping process flow. Therefore, facilities can complete routine calibration with less disruption to treatment or process operations.
This capability helps reduce maintenance-related downtime. It also allows teams to verify transmitter performance while the primary flow element remains installed.
Accessible Maintenance and Inspection
The diaphragm sensor can be removed when maintenance becomes necessary. Operators can also inspect the meter’s internal cross-section at the high- and low-pressure points without removing the Venturi meter from service.
These access points help maintenance teams assess internal conditions more efficiently. They also reduce the work associated with removing a large meter from the pipeline.
Extended Flow Range
The system can use dual or triple differential pressure transmitters to extend the minimum-to-maximum flow range. This arrangement helps maintain accurate and repeatable flow documentation across changing operating conditions.
Depending on the meter model, design, and secondary instrumentation, turndown ratios can reach 10:1, 20:1, 50:1, or greater. Therefore, the system can support applications with significant changes in flow demand.
Durable Venturi Construction
The HVT Venturi contains no moving parts. This construction supports a very long service life and reduces mechanical wear concerns.
The meter also has lower susceptibility to erosion. Furthermore, it contains no annular chambers that could collect material and create plugging problems. These features support dependable operation in contaminated and solids-bearing services.
Strong Measurement Performance
The sealed Venturi system provides repeatability of ±0.1%. Calibrated systems offer a basic accuracy of ±0.25% of total flow. Uncalibrated systems provide ±0.50% accuracy based on the listed two-sigma value.
The meter supports beta ratios from 0.30 through 0.75. It also operates at high flow velocities when the application requires them.
Flexible Installation
The HVT-SMS mounts in any position. This flexibility helps teams accommodate vertical, horizontal, and other piping orientations.
The Venturi geometry has no downstream installation effect and only minimal upstream installation effect. However, project teams should still confirm the required upstream and downstream straight piping for each application.
Low Head Loss
The Venturi design limits head loss to approximately 3.5% to 10% of the measured differential pressure. Consequently, the meter provides flow measurement while retaining more system pressure than many higher-loss primary elements.
Multiple Meter Constructions
The SM Series supports three HVT Venturi constructions. The HVT-SMC uses a cast iron body, while the HVT-SMD uses ductile iron. The HVT-SMF provides a fabricated Venturi option.
Common material choices include cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, and 304 or 316 stainless steel. Primary Flow Signal can also provide other materials for specific application requirements.
