PFS Rectangular Venturi Meter (HVT-RV)

The PFS HVT-RV Rectangular Venturi Meter provides accurate gas flow measurement in rectangular ducts and process systems. It achieves performance similar to a circular Venturi meter without requiring a rectangular-to-circular duct transition.

This design gives engineers greater freedom when working with large ducts, limited installation space, or application-specific dimensional requirements. PFS can configure the meter’s materials, coatings, end connections, flow range, line size, laying length, pressure, and temperature requirements.

The rectangular Venturi meter supports common end arrangements, including flanged, mechanical-joint, and weld-end configurations. PFS can fully fabricate the meter or cast the profile in place with a fabricated inlet and throat section. Standard sizes range from 2 to 144 inches, while larger designs are also available.

Westech Industrial supplies the PFS HVT-RV across Canada. Our team can help customers select the meter configuration, materials, connections, and secondary instrumentation for their application. Westech also provides technical service and Custom Fabrication capabilities for related panels, enclosures, shelters, and integrated measurement systems.

Description

Accurate Measurement Without a Circular Transition

The HVT-RV measures gas flow directly within a rectangular duct. Therefore, the system does not require a transition to circular piping. Removing that transition can simplify the installation and reduce the space required around the meter.

The rectangular design provides accuracy and head-loss performance comparable to a circular Venturi meter. Calibrated configurations offer a basic accuracy of ±0.50% of total flow. Uncalibrated configurations provide a basic accuracy of ±0.75%. The meter also delivers repeatability of ±0.1%.

Flexible Design for Application-Specific Requirements

PFS can adapt the rectangular Venturi meter to suit demanding process and installation conditions. Engineers can select the body material, coating, connection style, flow range, line size, and laying length.

Available end arrangements include flanged, mechanical-joint, and butt-weld configurations. PFS offers both fabricated flanged and fabricated butt-weld models. In addition, the meter can use a fully fabricated profile or a cast-in-place profile.

A design corresponding to ASME MFC or ISO 5167 requirements is also available. This option helps project teams address specific engineering or documentation requirements.

Low Permanent Head Loss

The HVT-RV creates a head loss equal to approximately 5.0% to 12.0% of the measured differential pressure. This efficient pressure recovery helps reduce permanent energy losses in the duct system.

The meter also supports flow measurement at high velocities. As a result, it suits large industrial air and gas systems where reliable measurement remains essential.

Minimal Sensitivity to Installation Conditions

The rectangular Venturi meter has no downstream installation effect. It also has minimal sensitivity to upstream conditions. However, the final upstream straight-run requirement depends on the specific installation and meter design.

The meter can mount in any position. This flexibility helps engineers work around existing duct layouts, structural restrictions, and limited access areas.

Wide Turndown Capability

Depending on the meter design and secondary instrumentation, the HVT-RV can achieve turndown ratios of 10:1, 20:1, 50:1, or greater. Higher turndown allows one meter to measure a broader operating range.

The selected differential-pressure instrumentation plays an important role in overall turndown. Westech can help match the meter with suitable sensing and measurement components.

Long Service Life Without Moving Parts

The HVT-RV has no moving parts within the flow stream. Therefore, the design reduces mechanical wear and supports a very long service life.

The Venturi profile also has lower susceptibility to erosion than many restrictive flow-measurement devices. Material selection can further improve durability in challenging industrial environments.

Multiple Pressure-Sensing Options

PFS offers several secondary instrumentation interfaces for the rectangular Venturi meter. Options include direct interface taps, annular pipe chambers, multiple pressure taps, and sealed diaphragm sensors.

These choices allow engineers to match the pressure-sensing arrangement with the process gas, duct size, operating environment, and required measurement performance.

Broad Material Selection

Common construction materials include carbon steel and 304 or 316 stainless steel. Additional options include aluminum, Monel, tantalum, zirconium, duplex stainless steel, 321 stainless steel, Hastelloy B and C, titanium, and chrome-moly steel.

This broad selection helps customers address temperature, corrosion, erosion, compatibility, and project specification requirements.

Applications

The PFS HVT-RV Rectangular Venturi Meter supports gas and air measurement throughout large industrial duct systems. Its rectangular profile makes it especially useful when converting the duct to a circular shape would add cost, space, or complexity.

  • Duct air and industrial gases
  • Combustion-air measurement
  • Refinery process systems
  • Steel mill air and gas systems
  • Industrial heater applications
  • Large rectangular ductwork
  • High-velocity gas flow
  • Applications requiring low permanent head loss

PRODUCT FAQ's

What does the PFS HVT-RV Rectangular Venturi Meter measure?
The HVT-RV measures the flow of air and industrial gases within rectangular ducts. It uses differential pressure created by the Venturi profile to calculate flow.
Why use a rectangular Venturi instead of a circular meter?
A rectangular Venturi fits directly into rectangular ductwork. Therefore, it eliminates the need for rectangular-to-circular transitions solely for flow measurement. This approach can reduce installation space, fabrication requirements, and system complexity.
How accurate is the HVT-RV rectangular Venturi meter?
A calibrated meter provides basic accuracy of ±0.50% of total flow. An uncalibrated meter provides ±0.75% basic accuracy. The design also offers repeatability of ±0.1%.
Does the meter require straight ductwork?
The HVT-RV has no downstream installation effect and only minimal upstream effect. However, upstream disturbances can still influence the required straight-run length. Westech will review the duct arrangement and help confirm the appropriate installation requirements.
What turndown ratio can the meter achieve?
The meter can achieve turndown ratios of 10:1, 20:1, 50:1, or greater. Actual performance depends on the meter configuration and the selected secondary instrumentation.
Can PFS manufacture the meter for large rectangular ducts?
Yes. The standard line-size range extends from 2 to 144 inches, and larger sizes are available. The rectangular design does not have a specific size limitation, although each meter requires application-specific engineering.
Which materials are available?
PFS commonly uses carbon steel, 304 stainless steel, and 316 stainless steel. Other choices include aluminum, Monel, duplex stainless steel, Hastelloy, titanium, zirconium, tantalum, 321 stainless steel, and chrome-moly.
Can Westech help configure the complete flow-measurement system?
Yes. Westech can help select the meter design, construction material, pressure-tap arrangement, and secondary instrumentation. Our technical service team can also support commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing measurement requirements.
Does Westech provide Custom Fabrication for this application?
Yes. Westech Industrial offers Custom Fabrication for related measurement panels, instrument enclosures, analyzer shelters, support structures, and integrated systems. Our team can coordinate these components with the rectangular Venturi meter and project requirements.
